MSF reduces cognitive decline in an animal model of stroke.

This study was designed to simulate the effects of MSF on recovering the memory of stroke victims. Using rats the experimenters surgically induced a stroke in two of the three groups of rats, treating one group with MSF and leaving the other group untreated. The third group did not have a surgically induced stroke and was used as the control. The groups were compared to each other with regards to several tests of memory and brain function, as well as motor function. The MSF-treated stroke group learned just as fast as the control group. The treated group also retained their memories longer than the untreated group, though not as long as the control group. MSF, however, did not appear to help with regaining motor function lost by the induced stroke. Tentatively, MSF also appeared to not just restore memory, but protect it from further damage from stroke related injury.
